My home beach. I confess I sometimes struggle to get overly excited about Bondi and the hype. This place can be exhausting. However it is my home, where I was born where my family live. But that aside if I was to look at this unique landscape with an aesthetic architectural eye, you would make the following observations: The concentric arching of the waters edge, echoed by the promenade wrapping around the back of the sand all held together by two emblematic, embracing headlands makes this edge very distinguishable. The scale of the beach roughly 1 km means that it remains intimate but still has variation along its length thats very important on a whole lot of levels. Its colour and light change according to the conditions, time of day and the seasons. This painting does’t try and capture the recognisable detail, I’ll leave that to others but rather an impression of the essentials of any great coastal scene - that of how light in this case summer afternoon haze plays against salt and water.
