The work of Abstract Expressionist Franz Kline was inspiration. While the New Yorkers punk rock calligraphy is now amongst the most sought after work in the entire cannon of art,  at the time his work was dismissed highly criticised and worse dismissed. He like his fellow painters such as Rothko , Pollock and Motherwell were like all great artists trying to redefine painting. Exploring how painting could evoke nothing more than emotion and reaction.
